I started learning how to cook when I was a child. I was always in the kitchen when mum, nana or my aunt were cooking—watching, helping, then eventually cooking on my own. It was their enthusiasm for cooking that encouraged me to learn how to cook.
I never realised how lucky I was to have the opportunity to learn how to cook until I moved out of home. Preparing meals for myself and others, or pushing my boundaries and figuring out how to cook something more adventurous that I’d never made before. That previous experience cooking as a child gave me the confidence to learn how to cook more and more new things. That’s not to say I haven’t had any cooking disasters—everyone does—but I can usually see where I’ve gone wrong and do better next time.
You may not have had the benefit of a family that loves cooking, or maybe you were never interested in learning how to cook until now and realise that cooking would be a handy skill to have. At which point you may feel daunted by the thought of learning how to cook.
